Sportfolio is a sport-based sharemarket game where players 'buy and sell' pro sports teams based on their potential movement on the league ladder. The aim is to build the biggest total portfolio by the end of the season, while navigating brokerage fees and the '2-round hold' rule.
This private trial is based on the current EPL season. Here's how it works.
Sportfolio - A Brief Overview on how it works
- From a £10,000 starting balance, buy and sell EPL teams like stocks
- You must hold each team you invest in for two games before selling
- Brokerage fees apply to every transaction, increasing in amount with each trade that round
- Use a limited number of 'No-Hold' and 'No-Brokerage' cards for some exceptions to the above
- Biggest portfolio after gameweek 16 wins!
Sportfolio - Rules In Full
GETTING STARTED
1.Each player starts with £10,000 to invest.
2.Share prices are based on each ladder position and stay the same all season for a given position — the lowest team (20th) is valued at £1.00, and each position up from there increases by 10% increments, with 1st valued at £6.12. Each team's value therefore changes as it climbs or falls ladder position.
3.Prices, player portfolio values and game rankings update after each EPL match is completed as the ladder is updated.
TRADING WINDOWS & LOCKOUT
4.Trading windows open shortly after each gameweek (round) when the game admin moves the game from lockout to an open trading window. You can make as many trades as you like, but there are brokerage fees which double with each trade you make in a single round. More on that below.
5.During the trading window, you can only see your own live portfolio. All other players' portfolios show a snapshot from the end of the previous round.
6.Once the trade deadline passes — usually 30 minutes before the first game of the next round — the game moves into lockout mode, and all portfolios are revealed. No further trading is permitted for that round, until all games are completed.
7.You can undo any trade made during the current trading window up until the deadline — shares and fees are fully reversed.
BROKERAGE
8.Each trade incurs a brokerage fee as a percentage of your current portfolio value, doubling for each trade within that same trading window. Your first trade costs 0.5%, second costs 1.0%, third costs 2.0%, the fourth costs 4.0% and so on.
🎟️ NO-BROKERAGE CARD
8a.Each player gets one No-Brokerage Card to use once across the entire season — your one chance to reset your portfolio without brokerage eating into the trades.
8b.Activate it from your Portfolio tab during an open trading window. Once active, every trade you make that round — as many buys and sells as you like — is completely brokerage-free.
8c.It can't be used in the first four gameweeks or the last two gameweeks of the season. If you activate it by mistake, you can cancel it and get it back — but only before you've made any trades that round.
THE SEASON
9.The season runs for 16 gameweeks: Gameweek 1 through 16 of the 2026/27 EPL season. The player with the largest portfolio value wins. A $100 Dan Murphy's voucher will go to the overall winner, plus a $50 voucher to the player with the highest single weekly performance (based on portfolio % increase).
PORTFOLIO LIMITS
10.You can invest a maximum of 25% of your current total portfolio value in a single team per round — but you can invest another 25% in that same team again in future rounds, up to a maximum of 75%.
11.You can only hold 50% of your total portfolio value in cash at any one time — including by the end of the pre-season trade deadline, so invest at least half your starting £10,000 before it closes, or the excess is forfeited once the game moves into lockout.
HOLD PERIODS
12.Each individual purchase must be held for a minimum of 2 rounds before selling, with the only exception being the use of a small number of "No-Hold Cards" as outlined below.
⚡ NO-HOLD CARDS
12a.Each player receives 3 No-Hold Cards for the entire season — use them wisely, they don't replenish.
12b.When buying shares, you can optionally use a No-Hold Card on that purchase. A tranche bought with a card can be sold after just 1 round instead of the usual 2.
12c.No-Hold Cards can only be used from Gameweek 5 onwards, and only 1 card per trading window. Once all 3 are used, the normal 2-round hold applies to all future purchases.
12d.No-Hold Card tranches are marked with a ⚡ QUICK badge in your portfolio. If you undo a No-Hold Card purchase before the window closes, the card is returned.
DIVIDEND & TAX
13.Top 4 teams on the ladder pay weekly dividends as follows: 1st: 8%, 2nd: 6%, 3rd: 4%, 4th: 2%. This is because they are less able to increase in value by rising in ladder position. Players must decide if it's still worth holding these teams, or selling to invest in other teams that have the ability to make bigger gains in price.
14.Dividends only apply if the team has been in the top 4 of the ladder for 2 or more consecutive rounds. A team that enters the top 4 for the first time earns no dividend that round — it must still be there the following round for dividends to begin. The rate paid is based on the team's current position at the time of payment (1st = 8%, 2nd = 6%, 3rd = 4%, 4th = 2%).
15.The team in last position loses 1% of its value each week that it stays in that position. This is to prevent players from using this team as a place to stockpile cash without any downside.
PLAYERS
16.Player count and admins TBD.
